Best Harry Potter Crafts: DIY Liquid Luck Earrings
I had so much fun making these liquid luck-inspired earrings! I got this idea from a Universally Crafted Meetup where I saw several interpretations of these adorable charms. I went home and rewatched the movies and decided that I wanted to try making some liquid luck earrings for myself.
These little charms came out absolutely adorable and can be used for so much more than just earrings. One of the crafts that I got at the meetup that inspired my liquid luck earrings project was a liquid luck keychain.
Researching how to make my DIY liquid luck charms
The first step in making these adorable earrings was to figure what to use inside the small bottles I bought. It took me a few tries to figure out what to use to create the look I wanted.
Since it is liquid luck, I wanted it to have a liquid quality even if it couldn’t move. I didn’t want all of the glitter or gold flakes to settles somewhere. I had read that some people used oil inside the bottle but I didn’t like that idea in case they ever broke or fell open.
One video recommended using glitter and clear glue, plus several other things like food coloring. I didn’t like the idea of adding yellow food coloring. In the movie, the liquid luck doesn’t actually look gold to me so I didn’t want it to be too yellow. I liked the idea of the gold flakes so they could stand out. I will try it with silver leaf flakes as well but I want to make sure that I have silver hardware for those.
Testing materials for my liquid luck charm earrings
Even though I didn’t like the idea of the food coloring, but I did have clear glue and glitter so I decided to give it a go.
Unfortunately, I didn’t like the end result. All of the glitter ended up settling even though the glue hadn’t finished drying. I also tried it with gold flakes and clear glue, since I had that as well. I liked this result a bit better, but it wasn’t quite was I was going for.
The gold flakes settled against the sides of the bottles. Again, it looked beautiful, but it wasn’t what I was going for.
The best recommendation I found was from Cooking and Craft Chick. In her video, she recommends using hair gel and gold flakes. This worked perfectly, giving the gold flakes a floaty, liquidy effect.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, I have noticed that the bottle with gold flakes, hair gel, and e6000 seems to be turning green. I’m not sure what’s causing the interaction but I will update this article when I find out more info and a better method for making these.
I did use a few other materials that she doesn’t mention in the video, like plastic pipettes, otherwise I followed her instructions.

Liquid luck earrings materials

Most of the materials that I used for this craft were the same as mentioned in the Cooking and Craft Chick video. I was able to find some teardrop bottles on Amazon but it was a large pack which was perfect for me since I make them to sell on the Love Live Hustle store and hide in the parks when I go.
If you don’t really need 40 bottles, I have also seen 4 packs of tiny bottles at Dollar Tree and Walmart.
- Tiny teardrop jars from Amazon (tiny bottles are also available at Dollar Tree/Walmart/Michaels) if you just need a few)
- Eye Screws (if your bottles didn’t include them)
- Gold Flakes- You can try it with glitter if that’s what you have, but I didn’t like how it looked as much as the gold flakes.
- Hair Gel – make sure its clear.
- Plastic Pipettes or syringes
- Toothpick
- E-6000 Glue- to seal the bottle and renforce the Screw in the cork top
- Large Fish Hook Earring Wire
- 4mm Jump Rings- to connect the eye screws with the fish hook earring wire
Making my liquid luck earring charms- add the filling
Gather your materials and prepare a paper towel or wax paper in your working area (for easy cleanup). Use a plastic pipette to add the hair gel into the bottles. I attempted adding the gold flakes first but this caused the gold flakes to be pressed against the wall of the bottle. This effect was really nice but not what I was going for with these.
When I was testing with the glue I found that it was very difficult to pour into the little jars, so I used the plastic pipettes to fill the bottles from the bottom up. This method was a lot neater than the first one I tried. If you don’t have plastic pipettes you can also use leftover plastic syringes if the tip can reach the bottom of the bottle.
If you don’t have something like that another idea that I had was to add some gel to a zip lock bag and use it like a piping bag. You could also simply try pouring the gel into the bottle a bit at a time and then using the toothpick to push it down before adding more. I tried it like is recommended in the video but I ended up making a mess, which is why I decided to use the pipettes I had laying around.
Adding and mixing gold flakes for my liquid luck earring charms

Once I filled it about halfway with the hair gel, I used a toothpick to add some of my gold flakes to the bottle. I used the toothpick to swirl it around and break the gold leaf pieces down even further to create a floating effect. I added more hair gel to finish filling up the bottle and swirled it around again with the toothpick.
I made sure to not put too many gold leaf pieces in there so it would look like they were floating in there. Feel free to add as much gold leaf as you want, though.
Preparing the earring part to add the liquid luck charm
Once I was satisfied with the way my liquid luck charms looked, I set them aside and prepared the cork. Before screwing the eye screw into the cork, I dipped in E6000 to reinforce it from the inside (hopefully!).
Once that was attached to the cork, I used some small pliers to open one of the jump rings and I attached the eye screw from my liquid luck charm and the fish hook earring wire.
Once that was done, I dipped the end of the cork into the e6000 and corked my prepared liquid luck charms, then left them to dry overnight.
TADA! All done!
Use the Liquid luck charm to create a necklace instead
Instead of making earrings with the liquid luck bottle, you could also make one into a necklace. This is more true to the story and would make an incredible gift for any Harry Potter Fan. Make the liquid luck charm as listed above, add the eye screw to the cork, then the jump ring. Instead of attaching that to the fishhook earring wire, you can add it to a larger jump ring to attach to a necklace.

More variations for your liquid luck charm
These charms are so adorable you definitely don’t have to settle for just a pair of earrings! As mentioned, you could also create a necklace by using different hardware. You could also attach the jump ring to a keyring, or even use the e6000 to create a pin with it.
And you don’t have to stick to a tiny bottle. This would make a beautiful addition to a bottle or potions collection.
